Mustang ll Cross Member
I am doing an upgrade on a 1940 ford frame. I have purchased a
mustang ll crossmember kit from "ROD PART WAREHOUSE". The issue I have is that everythig has matched or met the instruction sheet, except when I place the crossmember at the axel center mark on the frame. At that point I have about 3/16" space on either side, between the frame rail and the cross member. Is it normal to have to add filler in addition to the boxing plates, or is this perhaps a crossmember for a different year frame ( 33,34)???

Are we talking on the inside of the frame rail??? If so, you should have a section of boxing plate welded to the frame rails with the crossmember welded to it. Do you have a picture??? Easier to tell with a pic.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Is there a chance your frame rails have "moved" a bit? Do you have the centerline of the front axle located correctly?
Take a look at the '40 Ford frame dimensions on this link and see if it helps:

In any case, I usually find it worthwhile to call the supplier and ask him the question.Jack

The extra 3/16" space I have is between the boxing plates and the cross member. Also the frame rails are secured and haven't moved. The cross member placement is "dead on" at 16" on center as displayed in the instructions, which included a copy of the PDF file mention as well.
I will also try to get the Manufacturer's name of the cross member from the "RodParts Warehouse". I am guessing that may be my best bet. I will keep you guys posted as well.
There will be more question to follow as this frame build up progresses. Hopefully along the way I will be able to pass on some help to someone else too. I have two rods and have had "experiences" as well.
Thanks Guys,
Alan C.

I'm sure you considered this, but did you put the boxing plates INSIDE the C-channel, or on top of the flanges? If you put them inside, and the plate was 3/16, there's your answer. If you put them on the flanges . . . well, nevermind.Jack
