    3 speed question

     



    Kinda new to this forum thing. I've got question I'm sure someone can answer. I've got an origional 68 Chevy C-10 and it has the 235 straight 6 / 3 speed on the column set up. I'm wanting to swap in a small block but keep the factory shift column. The motor I plan on using is a rebuilt 350, but that will give way to a 283 I've set back to rebuild. My question is will the trans from a straight 6 block bolt right up to a small block or is there a different bellhousing I'd have to use for the swap? I'm going to buy an "extra" 3 speed trans so I can keep the factory motor and trans together, but I'd like to be a little more educated before I go shopping. Thanks for everyone's time/input!

    I'm not sure how well that old three speed will hold up to a 350. If your heart is set on the swap (which sounds sweet), then go to www.advanceadapters.com. I've never tried a swap from a straight 6 motor to a v8. Most likely the motor won't bolt up to the three speed. Advance adapters makes all kinds of bellhousings and what not. They make adapters that will bolt a chevy motor to a ford tranny! So I'm sure you'll find something.

    Isnt a 68 a little late for a 235? It should be a 230 or 250 six.
    If it is a 230/250, the bellhousing is same pattern as a sbc. The 235 left us in 1962/1964 as I remember

    You can go on the web and find the transmission....probably the same for a six as was for a 307/327; perhaps the ratios in first and second were different.

    All old chevy engines/ trans will bolt up to 1 another with the correct bellhousing/ flywheel, it's almost 1 size fits all. the trans should be good for 300 rwhp approx but, no more than. The motor you have is more than likely the 250 6cyl, was 150 horse, 235 was discontinued in 1962.

    I pulled a 3 speed out of the junk yard and hooked it up to the 400 sbc I had in a '62 chevy pickup. The trans was in a '65 6 cylinder Malibu. Never had a problem with the trans, but ate 3 rearends.

    Thanks guys! Yeah, in my stupidity I put down that it was a 235, I knew it was a 250 but got all those 2's, 3's, and 5's mixed up. (250, 350...) I've also found a donor truck (67 gmc lwb) that I might be getting for $300-400. It's a little rough (rusted floors, dented doors, non-running 250 motor) but I think it's got a "newer" 3 speed in it. I was told I should try to find a sycronized trans because they hold up better. I'm not trying to make a real tire burner out of this truck, just a nice street cruiser with a lot of nostalgic parts. That's why I'll be putting in the 283 later (I know it's not the right year since they stopped in '67, but a 283 is a lot cooler than a 307, right?)
