Disc brake kit install???
Contemplating an upgrade of the braking system on my 34 Ford roadster and was considering using Wilwood brake kits. I believe that I have the rear brakes figured out, replacing the Ford factory drums, but the front has me somewhat baffled...... The car has a solid tube dropped front axle with disc brakes and 14" wheels now. The Wilwood rep says I need to identify the axle, how in the heck do I figure that out? I am thinking the big question is not so much the axle as it is the spindle. Does anyone out there have experience installing Wilwood disc brake kits on staight axle street rods? Are 14" wheels gonna be a problem?

You will have to know what spindles you have on the car, that should be enough to order brakes. As far as 14" wheels clearing the discs, depends on the wheel, some will, some won't.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Thanks for the response. I guess the question is how do I figure out what kind of spindle it has? The car has 11" front disc brakes on it now.

I am using Wilwood up front and on the back. But the guesses of what type of spindles you have would be endless for us due to the possiblities. Perhaps you could take a picture of the spindle where it attaches to the axle? That would give us a place to start.
If you don't have a digital camera, can you take a look on some websites to see if you recognize them to be Ford, Chevy, etc???
Other info might help us guess as well like:
1. year/decade the car was rebuilt
2. wheel bolt pattern diameter (5 x 4.5 ???)
3. Axle width
Give us something to help you with and we will try to help you "brake" the mystery.

Well the hub is 5x4.5 and the car was built in 1987 or 88. I'll look into posting a picture if I can figure out how to do that, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your comments.

I am in the process of installing a Wilwood kit on a 46 pickup. The kit says for 32-48 Fords. Your spindles may have bushings to adapt to your hubs. Mine did, and had to be taken off by the machine shop. The kit I have has 10 3/4 inch rotors. It includes aluminum hubs. If you use steel wheels with the aluminum hubs you have to have #300-7500 steel wheel shield.
A couple of other things about this kit that may or may not be applicable (this is "Black Gold" performance brake kit, marketed by Speedway). It does not recommend use of DOT 5 brake fluid, or the use of rubber flexlines.Last edited by 46yblock; 04-04-2005 at 09:19 PM.

Newbie here, just registering in to help my bro, Hidebinder, and post a few pics for him to try and help identify his front end. Can anyone tell anything with these? Thanks.
Beautiful work, that is one nice and well built car!
