    Secret car door button?

    Hey guys,

Ok I want to shave my door handles on my 56 merc, but I don't think I want to use door poppers or any electrical keyless entry. I want to go old school and install like a button under the door, but I have no ide how too, or where I can get one, or even how it works. Can anybody help me with this, or maybe some other ideas?

Thanks in advance for your help, and for reading this.

    Kevin

Well not sure what you mean by "door poppers" the way most guys do it it to put an electric solenoid in the door and a button out side somewhere to open the door........
If you run relays to handle the load you can run just about any switch you want.
I've put micro switches in the moldings or mirrors also have put starter buttons in the wheel wells or under the rockers so its really up to you what you want........ They make magnetic switches that you just pass a magnet over and it pops the door they also have what is called a tap switch that you mount close to a window some where ( close but not where you can see it)
then to open the door you tap on the glass by the switch and the door opens..... from what I remember you can change the coding on it so the number of taps and the time in between taps has to be right for it to work......... just some ideas

If you don't want anything electrical you could hide a pull cable in the fender well...... there usually used to get in the car if the battery goes dead ona car with electric doors

Also I seen guys leave the key lock in the door and take the handle off then hook it up to the door latch so when you turn the key it "opens" the door........ but don't get out and leave the motor running and close the door......... cuz you can't get back in ..... Don't Ask!...... alls I can say is mother nature called and dam it was cold!!!!

Hope some of this rambling helps

Thanks MrMopar that was excatly the info I was looking for. I want to head into the cable direction, I like the ID of putting a cable around the fender or something. I want to install power locks anyway so I can have some form of locking it. Does anybody have any idea where, of how I can make my own cable so that I can get started.
Thanks guys, for listening to my babble.

You can buy a kit from some of the hot rod shops like auto loc or wattsons street works but they run about 50 bucks a door OR
you can do what I did and go to the local hardware store and buy 1/8" cable then go to the bicycle shop and buy the cover that they use for the hand brake cable (not sure what they call it) you can't buy the cable there cuz at the bike shop all their cables are cut to length......... then just run run it from the latch out to the fenderwell on that end you can buy a knob to put on it or just put a loop in the end of the cable
In the door make sure you clamp it down tight so the cable housing don't move when you pull the cable...... I use those plastic cable clamps that take one screw to hold them down the whole thing for both doors should cost you about 10 to 15 bucks

I put one of these on both doors inside my car they are hidden beside the seat cuz I removed the handles inside and out and put power windows so if the battery went dead with me inside I'd be in bad shape They work great

I am putting the push buttons under the front dr. hinges that are frenched in [you can do this on older cars] with an ignition switch under the gas filler dr. this way I can shut of the current to the latches and lock the car. Old school way.I have a 37 Terraplane with a mopar drive train.

Thanks, your right a ground wire would be better, thats what you get when a carpenter builds a rod. Thats what these forms are all about, helping others.

    Electric Doors

On my '40 Chevy, before I turned it into a race car, I had shaved handles. You don't need door poppers at all as the door will open just fine when you hit the button. I'd recommend the solenoids that go inside the door with a cable to your door latch. I also had a remote set up on my key chain to pop open the doors. I also had my trunk hooked up and even a tilt front end with hydraulics to open whole thing, all by remote.

What would be the best placement to mount the solenoid to pop the door this is relatively new to me?

Depending on how much room you have in the door.....
One of my cars has them right under the latch facing up
The other they are up under the windwing vent window
They also have mounted them in the bottom of the door and used a cable and pulley to get up to the latch...

    Hope this help

They have some small ones...... I used them on a Bronco
If the latch works easy you could get by with them
