    Question Power Steering Pump

Hey guys me and my brother are working on his 78 chevy pickup, and we were thinking about replacing his power steering pump, because it went out last weekend.Do you have to bleed the pump when putting it on or is there anything you have to do before putting it on. I would apperciate all the help i can get and the tips. Thanks guys.

Easy job, But ya will need to rent,Buy,Beg ,Borrow or steal a special puller to pull the
the pulley off, They usually supply a bolt, nut & washer with the new pump to press the pulley back on with, As far as bleeding just fill it with fluid, start the engine and turn the steering wheel back & forth a few times shut it off and top off the fluid.....

a little safer way to bleed it that i have found is to jack the front end up and keep turning the wheel lock to lock until no bubbles appear in the resivor. I've heard of it being done while the engine is running but everytime i tried the hurry up method i blew the pressure line off thanks to that hidden mass of destuctive air bubbles.

If you buy a replacemtn pump new or rebuilt it will come with installation and bleeding instructions. One caution, do not fill the reservoir all the way up before the bleeding process or you will end up with fluid all over the place as it will over flow the reservoir.

Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong!
