    12 bolt pinion seal replacement

What's involved in changing the seal? Can I do it with the rearend in the car? Does the carrier need to be removed? What kind of setup needs to done? If anyone's done it before and has advice it would be really appreciated... Thanks!

It's been a looong time since I've worked on a 12 bolt so somebody with a better memory can correct me. There is a crush sleeve behind the seal. You might have to replace the crush sleeve at the same time you replace the seal. The crush sleeve preloads the pinion brearings when you torque the pinion nut. And I think you can do the seal change in the car.

So let's see if I'm right or if I've burned too many brain cells in the last 25+ years.

Take pinion nut off, then the yoke, The pinion comes out from the back so , no the pinion will stay in the housing. Replace seal and reassemble. Someone else will know if you need to replace the crush sleeve. It's been too many years for me to remember.
