starter noise
I have a 55 Chevy wagon that I installed a Mildly Modified 350. My problem is when I start the car I am embarrassed by all the noise. The starter noise is awful. I bought a new starter, made no difference. Shimmed it to specs and then expermented, made no difference. I’m guessing the only thing left is the ring gear. Although it sure doesn’t look bad or I don’t know what to look for. Any help sure would be appreciated.

Take a look at the ring gear where the starter drive meshes with the teeth,,,,look for offsett mesh,,,,,also look at the starter drive gear,,,inspect it for signs of offset also.
Finally get a look at the flex plate if it's an automatic,,and look for loose bolts,,and cracks in the flex plate.
Repair accordingly
Good Luck"I don't know everything and i like it that way"

I wanted to complain about this NZ slang business, but I see it was resolved before it mattered. LOL..
