    What is a fair...

...hourly rate to pay to a shop to work on my 66 Nova? I went to one of the shops in Ft. Lauderdale that one of the posters said I should swing by. I think the rate seems a little high though. They want $80/hour. Is that way high, high or fair?

I was thinking something like $50/hour would be a fair rate. Am I dreaming?

That would seem to be the standard shop rate anywhere these day's,even here in Canada,,Remember,,they have overheads to cover that a lot of the smaller shops do not.
And if it's Custom work you need done,,then you get what you pay for in most cases.

I always tried to stay at $65.00 an hour for fab time and chassis work. I'm in South Dakota, labor is cheap here.

Thanks, fellas. So, it seems like $80/hr, while slightly high, is not outrageous.

I dont know if its this way in your part of the country, but around here the stock car racers get a lot more for the money, than the drag racers or the street guys do .

Example: I can take one of my Quickchanges and have a Open Wheel Modified rolling chassis built ( Simular to the picture of Mikes posted a couple days ago) for right at $4000. That includes chassis, suspension and shock mounts, mounting the rear, front suspension, motor mounts, radiator mounts, seat mounts, roll cage and choice of bodies. Of course I have to supply fuel cell, seat, shocks ,springswheels and tires.

I hear of the street guys spending what I consider a small fortune for Narrowing, tubbing and cage. Go Figure!

I don't know exactly what you're looking to get done, but you might try to nail 'em down on a price. $80 an hour does seem to be at the high end of the scale, but if they've been at it long enough they ought to have some idea of how long it will take. That way if it takes 'em longer ( too many coffee breaks, too much time looking at it hoping it will do itself, etc.), at least you know your cost up front. Can work both ways though.....might take 'em half as long as the estimated.

Bert, I want to convert to disc brakes, drop the car down closer to the ground, put bigger wheels on it, add air conditioning, add a stereo, put a better radiator/cooling system in it.
