ok welders out there
this isnt really hot rod related but would be more of a machinist,welder question.
my dad has a older 3pt hitch mower that he pulls behind a small tractor. it has 3 blades and a gearbox in middle that kind of looks like a rearend with two 3/4 shafts sticking out the side and one straingt down that go to another rt hand drive downwards to run on blade on each side.
the problem is he caught something with one of the blades and the slip pin did not break and he twisted the shaft right off one side. the shaft is approx 3/4 and is machined on both ends .
dad didnt want to spend a lot of money so i fixed it for him.
i cut out approx 6 inches out of the break and then laid both pieces in a piece of angle iron with a piece of shaft in between to make the right length i welded all together making shure they were straight.
welded them up goog and got good penatration.(stick welder)
i then ground the entire welds down flush and took a 1/8 thick tube that fit the shaft prefectly and slid the shaft inside.
the whole shaft is about 3 ft long. i then drilled and pinwelded the shaft at about 6 spots on each side of the break and welded the ends of the pipe to the shaft.
we put it back on and dads been using it since . dad didnt think it would be strong enough now i told him i bet it the ther side would twist off before this thing broke. i would think its overkill.
what would be a proper procedure for a fix like this as opposed to what i did?????

You're right, it will outlast the other side. If you want to eliminate the pins next time, drill 3/8" holes in the cover tubing and weld rosettes in the holes.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.

i must have described it wrong thats what i did except i drilled 3/16 holes about a 1/16 of an inch into the shaft and plug welded flush with the pipe.
