6v/12v
my uncle has bought a 54 ford truck this is a cherry little ford but he says if you don't do every little trick just right to get it to start the 6v will leave you setting,he wants to keep the truck all original as possible he been told he could put a 12v battery on this 6v system and it would give him the extra charge he needs. true/or false? what are his options to be able to stay with 6v,and not worry about the starting power? wjr

allright. i got the same problem with my 53 cheiftain. i know it will cost sum more money to get it changed to 12v system, or else alot of time. so i have been goin with the 6v system for now. but i have been having problems wiht the starter too. i even had it hooked up to a 12v battery to check it and i still couldnt get the starter to spin fast enough. should i jsut give up and change over to a 12v system or is it possible to get the starter workin right after 52 years of use? ( ps . the starter was jsut recently rewound. and we are taking it back to the same guys to see if they know what is wrong)

Generally the starter will handle the 12 volt battery but that's about it. Your generator won't be putting out 12 volts unless you get it reworked. So the battery will never charge. And the radio and bulbs will most likely be fried by the 12 volts, along with the coil also.
Someone else might have alot more knowledge than me on this though.

flatheader6. It sounds to me that you don't have very good battery connections. With a 6v system you have to have extremely good connections to your battery, starter and very good grounding. And make sure you have some very large battery cables, the bigger the better, a 12 volt cable won't get it on a 6v system.
