Who says its gotta be brass ? steel would be stronger, and instead of a slot for the butterfly just mill one side flat, lotsa carb shafts are done like that, I think on the brass ones they gotta have the slot for strength.....

That is a great idea, does steel rod come in the right size?? I thought brass might be used because of its self lubricating quality.?

I don't have any idea what size ya need,
But I'm sure ya can buy some steel rod that is at least very close in size and then turn it down to the proper size, although I don't have a lathe I have been able to size small stuff like that by chucking it up in the drill press and using emory cloth to cut it down to size. Yes the brass may act as a lubricant, but many many carbs had/have steel shafts & cast bases using no bushhings, tolorence needs to be fairly tight so ya don't have vacume leaks around the shaft, another option would be to make your shaft and take it and the base plate over to the machine shop and have em put brass bushings in the base plate and hone the bushings for the proper fit to the shaft.....

O.K thanks for all the input. What I have done is.....spoken to a tool maker who has said "WHAT" and then said "this is what we will do" we are getting a block of teflon and making some spacer type things to fit both my worn shafts and a reemmed hole we will make in the base plate. Looks like it will be both cheap and fun to make..... I LOVE HOTRODS! Again thanks for the input. I think I will post some pics of this as it is going to be soooo cheap. How rare is that?
