I just got in from dinner and was looking at your post in disbelief. As I was reading these post Cheatin Keaton called so I read him your post . He wanted to know if You were drinking? I told him you had not touched anything in more than 10yrs. He could not believe you thought a 55 to 57 chevy weighed that much . He said when he was running D Modified Production ,with the 55 -210 2dr. sedan that the shipping weight was 3115lbs. As we were talking I looked it up .My book said 3125lbs. He had to weigh 3745 to make weight for DM/P. He added a 40 lb. flywheel, a 90lb. bellhousing, a tank of fuel ,and still had to add a bunch of weight to make the class. It amazes me that when several people here have the books with the proff in front of them, thats not good enough for some people. They want to hear what they want to hear. The only way a 57 Chevy convertible weighed 4400 lbs.was with 5 people in the trunk trying to sneak into the Drive-In. If You believe otherwise, You need to see somebody.

no riverhorse i dont belive every thing ever body tells me and i dont know how they come up with shipping wt. and you dont either. it could be like the HP rating back then. if i was quoting HP out of the book you would be telling me im craze to. ill belive the guy that said he weighted his own car before i belive the book yes, he had no reason to lie about it. he had a 57 i ask him did he know how much it weighted and thats what he told me. i want gonna tell him you said he was wrong, you call him and tell him. ive all ways belived 57 weighted more than 3400 llbs. so no i havent changed my mind one way or another. what can i say, i wish you wouldnt get so upset. kennyd says his is 4000, the one up here the man says 4900 less driver, gas and what ever, so i still dont know. i looked up about 30 GM cars tonight from 1949 to 2003 and every one was from 3100 something to 3400 something lbs. that to me sounds a little odd. what happened to the light weight cars? a 1993 camaro weights the same thing as a 1957 chev.????????? im not talking about a car sitting on a car hauler either. if ive offended anyone im sorry, but its more to this than meets the eye. dont forget i know Cheatin Keaton also. if the car belonged to Cheatin Keaton and it was on the scales at the drag strip and i was looking at the weight i still wouldnt belive it.Mike

Riverhorse, I woke up this morning, only to read all these replies. I think you are wrong, and I'll tell you why. The weight scale I used to check my Ranchero with was a State scale. I even have the slip somewhere, and if I find it, I'll post it. I looked up the weight for a 1969 Ranchero GT, with a 429cj, and ac. Just like I had. It said weight was 3200. All I can think of is total dry weight for shipping. So, if you add the total ready to drive down the street, it's 3900. That makes the Chevy 4 dr weigh at least 4100. I believe that, and I'm sticking to it.
PS I don't know about now, I assume it would be the same, but, at the dealer when cars came in, they had nothing at all in them. I also helped fill them up with what they needed to get ready. [/QUOTE
talked to a guy today had 2 of them couldnt prove it but he says they were at least 3800 and not over 4000 with some gas in them. until i see a weight ticket of a daily driver im gonna say a 57 chevy v8, auto. trans. dailey driver is somewhere between 3800 and 4100 lbs. thats my story and im sticking to it.Mike

Well, heres a little more on my comparison. What I asked was what would my 1934 truck weigh ? I can assure you that with what I have now, is way lighter that the posted weight. Weight will be about 2900 pounds, not 4400. And, I am keeping it pretty much stock on the wood thing, just like factory. But, The Merc 410 instead of the 6 cylinder. C6 trans, instead of the old stick they had.
The new 1934 Chevrolet Series DB Master Commercial truck line was completely revised. For the first time trucks featured a unique appearance, no longer did they share front end sheet metal with autos. The half-ton trucks' wheelbase was stretched to 112-inches. Its frame was entirely new, heavier and stronger than the passenger car frames of the past. Subsequently, its GVW rating increased to 4400 pounds from 4100 pounds. Horsepower increased to 60 at 3000 rpm from 56 at 2750 but maximum torque was unchanged. Body offerings remained at four--canopy, panel, pickup, and sedan delivery.Mike

It just so happens that I have a few old titles and/or copies of titles here at home. Thought maybe some of these might be interesting to compare.
!- 67 chevelle malibu v/8 2dr.h.t Title says 3115 lbs.
Book says 2980/3115
2- 63 chevy 11 ,2dr h.t. came with a 6 cylinder. Title says 2400lbs.
Book says 2590
3- 64 Impala ss 2dr.h.t. Title says 3700 lbs. Book says 3325/3450
I think I may have given that 3700 to DMV It was just a guess.
4- 66 Impala 327 4dr. sedan. Title says3565lbs. Book says 3425/
3565lbs.
5- 77 El camino . Title says 3881 Lbs.Book does not go past 75.
6- 78 El camino . Title says 3369 lbs. First yr, for the smaller ELcamino.
7- 84 Z28 Camaro. Title says 3276lbs
8- 92 GMC 1500 pickup 8 ft bed . Title says4293lbs

12- 81 Cadillac El Dorado Title says 3822 lbs
13-86 Chevrolet G20 LWB Conversion Van. Title says 4200 Lbs.
Mike , Please dont tell me you think the weight of a 57 Chevy is more than 2 different Cadillacs, 2 different G20 Long wheelbase vans, A 92 GMC full size pickup with an 8 ft. bed and A 91 4x4 full size V/8 Bronco. It just aint so!!!
Oh,I just found the title to my 70 Chevelle ,2dr HT.Title says it weighed 3513 lbs. After I had put the 406,4 speed, posi, Blow proof bellhousing and 3 in.exhaust on it ,I had it weighed at the moving storage in Scotts Addition. It weighed 3605 lbs.with a quarter tank of gas.

ok riverhorse you are right, shipping wt. of a 57 is around 3400lb. the? has been for the last 2 days is whether shipping wt. and (that would be the wt. that would be on titles), is the same wt, as when you get the car home from the dealership. we were talking about a 57 being raced at the track when this started , not setting on a car hauler. i asked 4 dif. people that own 57's and they say 3800 to 4000 is what their wt. sitting in the drive way with a 1/2 tank of gas was, so to end this I'm saying you are right a 1957 chev. shipping wt. is 3400 lbs. i believe that, hadn't never thought about it before, for some reason I've delt with actual wt. all my life, and you would play hell driving that car off of the car hauler home, but you are right. i apologies to everybody on here that i questioned your answers. i wish i had worded my ? another way. thanks mikeMike
