Glass back mufflers?
Does anybody know about glass backs? Are they a legal muffler? or would i get stopped for having them on my 77 corvette? I think it would realy sound bad! In a good way! Or would take away the classic look of my car? Any help out there? THANKS!

i think you mean glass pack muf. Justus becks, thats a muf. shell that has matted fiberglass packed in it and most of the time cheap and loud. after a while the fiberglass will burn out of it and youll have a stright through muf. most states dont give tickets for the type muf. but how much noise the car makes. i have run them on a lot of things, but got away from the noise a few yrs ago. if you like them thats all that counts.Mike

Lol, i agree, Glass packs or cherry bombs or whatever you want to call them nowadays is just too loud for my taste anymore. i ran them a long time ago and would only use them until i got my "real" mufflers. in. But hey if you like that sort of thing then go for it. i personally like a good throaty set of flowmasters 2 chambers and they are a bit loud but they sound good. Later,Joe

flow
how well do glass packs flow? I have two that are, I believe, 30 inches long. I'm debating on using them or flow masters. The upside of the glass packs is I already have them. They kill my ground clearance so two flowmaster hanging under a 3rd Gen F body won't bother me any.

how well do glass packs flow? they are about 70 % open new. thats why they are so loud. after you run it awhile it blows or burn all of the fiberglass out of it, then its wide open.Mike

someone told me they were more restrictive. I knew they were pretty much wide open, but I thought that maybe the baffling caused some kind of turbulence or something that hurt the flow.

lol I think it was someone who had flowmasters. I have a friend who has a pair on his mustang gt they sound sweet. I don't really care. I've had my glasspacks on they came with another car. They're old so I figure they're burnt out. They're pretty long. They have a decent rumble to them with that camshaft I have. I was just debating spending 160 for a pair of mufflers when I have two glass packs that I imagine are pretty much hollow.

if that guy had of had the glass packs he would have told you the same thing about the flowmasters. JMO is if you can see day light out the other end of a muf. it would have less restrictive than one you cant see through.Mike

that's what I think. if I had a place and time I'd like to take a pipe and drill holes in it and run it into a larger pipe and seal it up. Leave the glass packing out.

Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
