    1997 F150

Where would be a good place to start with this truck if i were to buy it? It has a v6, 5 speed. The truck is completely stock. Im not exactly sure what size of motor other than it is a v6. What kind of things can I do with this motor or would it need to be pulled and replaced with a better motor? Do they make a super chip or programmer or anything like that for these trucks?

Get rid of the V6 and go for a 300 cube straight six,,,if your gonna stay with a six.
If it's an eight cylinder you want,,then go for a big cube V8 cos there is no substitute for cubes.
They are nice trucks,,,i traded mine for an eddie baur edition Bronco,,,i miss my F150 already.

What motors did the f150's come with in 97? Parts aren't a problem at all because I work for a transmission shop in OK. Things down here are cheap to begin with but then when you get the parts at cost + shipping, the bill isn't so bad.

    I have 2 options:
    A) Keep my 87 silverado, build a motor for it, and bring it back to life.
    B) Buy this truck from my sister, swap the motor/trans and make it haul ass.

I REALLY would like to try the 292 inline 6 in my silverado but i need to get with some of our wholesale companies to see about a rebuild kit for that motor. The only one i could find was at cliffordperformance.com and they want about 800 bucks for it and thats too much considering that I can get a master rebuild kit, where i can choose my lifters/cam, pistons, for $159.

That inline six is supposed to be one helluva motor.

Any suggestions on what i should do? Even if i sell my truck and buy this f150 it wont be for another 6 months probably that i can get it.

The F150 is one helluva truck.
My all time best choice is alway's the 300cube straight six efi.
my Bronco presently has the 302 V8,,,still a nice motor,,but not half as good at pulling a trailer like the 300cube efi six was.
Your Silverado i couldnt advise you on,,,since i'm a Ford man when it comes to trucks. come to think about it,,,i'm a Ford man when it comes to cars as well. Lol

Ok, you got a link as to where i can get the 300 from? It's just as good as the chevrolet 292. I don't really want to pay a whole lot of money but I dont want to waste a few hundred bucks on a shitty motor either you know?

The 300 Inline six is a common engine,,,you can find a donor vehicle almost anywhere,,,they will usualy go over the clock and still stay strong,,so dont worry so much about buying used,say,,$250.00,,,if you need confirmation on this,,,,ask any of the 4X4 guy's who like playing in the mud,,,they will tell you the same thing,,,,,,they are one helluva strong motor, even with lots of miles on them.

Ok, thanks a bunch. I think no matter what, build the 300, build a new tranny that will match the 300, pull my power train, drop the new one in. Will my drive shafts still work? What about mounting? tranny mounts are gonna have to be bought probably but will the 300 just drop right in and bolt up or will there be some modifications that id have to do?

If i were you,,, i'd buy a wrecked F150 and pull the whole works out and do the transplant,,,tranny mount,
engine mounts, computer etc.( do not use the hydro elastic engine mounts,,they are nice for vibration dampening but they suck when it comes to allowing too much flex in the driveline, use the older style solid rubber mounts) my brothers 96 F150 is in the shop getting painted as we speak, cherry red with silver two tone,,,i think he cares more for his truck than he does for his wife,,,,just joking.

Ok, so what kind of horses and Ft. Lbs. Torque could i get out of a 300ci v6? Would i have to trade out my tranny too or would the tranny that is in it do ok? Are there any reasons that i should stay to a 300 ci v6 or should i bump up to a v8? I know there are no substitutes for cubes but a 300ci v6 is pushing 50 ci per cylinder and thats about 7 more cubes per cylinder than a chevy 350 or a ford 351. I think in this case 6 = 8 because 300 ci v6 is a big v6. Lemme know.

The current stock engine in the f150 is a 4.2 liter v6 if that helps with anything.
