Alternator help
I need a wiring diagram to hook up an alternator. Mine has the wire stud on the back and a plug with 2 wires on the side. It's a 327 engine in a 23 T. I'm assuming the 2 wire plug is the regulator. Can somone tell me where each wire goes and hooks up to?

It has the wires, but I think it's hooked up wrong. Auto Zone tested it for me off the motor and it passed.

It tested OK. If mine has the built in reg, Do I need the external reg?

When hooked up like the second pic and I remove the battery cable should the motor keep running? Is it OK to take the batery cable off when the motor is running?

Second pic looks like the way to go.

Thanks for your help. It's a 23 T and it came this way. I will clean it up when I get everything the right way.

Run a short jumper wire from the stud on the back to the #2 connecter, and the other wire like in DennyW's diagram. A dash light bulb works for a resistor.
I use a GM self-exiting regulator on many setups, the large wire to the rear bolt is the only one needed. Clean and simple.

I hooked it up like the diagram. I did not hook up the blue wire. I cranked it up and removed the battery cable. It kept running but I had some smoke come out from the alternator. I cut it back off. Could this be because I didn't hook up the dash light? I disconnected the big wire going to the battery and cranked it up. The alternator is putting out 13 to 14 volts. Now I'm scared to hook it up for fear of burning up my alternator. I jumpered the wire closest to the stud on the back.

I didn't hook up a wire to where you have the blue one. When I look at the back of my alternator the big lug is on the other side, Which one of the lugs do I jumper to the big lug on back?
