Titling a custom built car...
If I were to completely build a car from the ground up as far as the chassis, frame, and body, how would i go about getting a title for the car after I got it running.

Go to where you get your license plates & tell them what you have done & get the forms you have to fill out. In Florida you have to save receipts on all major components. You will then probably have to go thru a safety inspection. My county in Fl requires no emission inspection, your State/county might be different
The important thing is to find out what you need before you start.
There is a web site that tells what you need for each state. Do a google search.Don Meyer, PhD-Mech Engr(48 GMC Trk/chopped/cab extended/caddy fins & a GM converted Rolls Royce Silver Shadow).

As Don says, get ahold of DMV, and talk to the inspectors. Even though your not required to go through emission testing where you are right now, ask what the requirements will be, as the car will have to go through at least a level 2 inspection when its titled and that may be a part of it.
As a specially constructed vehicle it will be be titled and be required to meet the safety/emissions requirements for the year you get it titled.
THEN, after you have the information from the DMV, go to the Cochise College book store and buy a copy of "Title 28 Transportation Laws of Arizona" This is the bible in Arizona for regestering vehicles and sets forth the minimum safety requirements. When/if you ever get the car buillt buy a current copy to ensure the laws havent changed between the time you started and when it is completed.I've NEVER seen a car come from the factory that couldn't be improved.....

Does anyone know what is checked in a level 2 inspection??? I don't live in a emissions controlled area, but is that part of the inspection??? The DMV Site says that all that's required is the inspection and the vin to be assigned and that is 25 bucks altogether. I can't afford to get the book right now as it is all tied up in this car and school itself, so any info from someone who has been there and done that here in AZ would be appreciated greatly. Thanks for the info so far.

Gee did you call DMV yet??? They are the ones that will be doing the inspection and who you have to make happy.
I live in the same general area you do, vehicle requirements change from time to time and unfortunatly are can sometimes be left to individual inspector interpretation. Using the book and having the car pass the first time will be a lot cheaper and less aggravating than having to redo things.
As another resort, check the local library. Chances are if you can't afford the $20 or so for the book you really can't afford to build the car.I've NEVER seen a car come from the factory that couldn't be improved.....
Thank you Roger. .
