Ed,
Did you go to this site?
www.v8s10.org
This site is dedicated to the S-10 owner that wants to put a SBC or BBC in his Blazer, S-10, or Jimmy.
All the questions you've asked were already covered in great detail on this site.
What engines will fit and what parts to buy and where, are all covered. It even covers transmissions, and how to modify the frames for them.
I used this site because I put a 327 SBC in a 84 S-10 frame under a 52 Ford pick-up. For me, the 327 and TH350 with a 9" output shaft was a bolt in, and I didn't have to cut the driveshaft. Without the info from this site I'd probably be outside still trying to figure out how to make it all fit with the wrong mounts. There are inexpensive aftermarket parts made just for the SBC, BBC, TH350, TH400, TH700 swap.
Like I said in a previous reply. everything you need for this swap, including aftermarket vendors and prices are on this site.52 Ford F-1, 327 Chevy, S-10 frame
