    Question Ford 9" Rear End

So lets see if I can explain this right.

I am building a 1940 Ford Tudor Sedan Deluxe street rod. I want to use a Ford 9" rear end. What length should the rear end be made to if I want to use a wheel that stays inside the wheel well, and I don't tub the car? I want the largest possible offset to a wheel I can use. I like that look. I will be riding on air.

What is the majic rear end length, wms to wms?

It works best to put the tires and wheels you will be running in the wheel well with the proper spacing to the inner and outer fender panels, then measure the distance between the wheel mounting flanges.

Since nobody else has spoken up, here is my two cents worth. Unless you want to spend money narrowing a rearend, start with a proven swap. There is a ton of information on the net, magazines, and books. Most companies that sell the rear dual leaf spring kit can suggest a rearend. For the 40 Ford, the most common is the Granada , Bronco, or 57-59 Ford rearend. I went with the Bronco unit in my 37 Ford to keep the 5 x 5 1/2 bolt pattern. Here are a couple of links to some info on Ford 9".

I used an 8" Maverick under my 40. With Chassis Engineering springs, spring pads are fine where they are. It is the narrowist [spl?]of the 8", at 57.5 if I remember correctly. If you must have a 9", you will probably have to narrow one. I abused the 8" uder my last 40 pretty good, with no failure. Joe
