'57 chevy engine size options
I need info on what is needed, or if it is possible, to change the motor in a '57 Chevy 210 from a 235 6cyl to a 283 v-8 (or any suggestions of alternate options) and what transmission should go with it. I am just looking to improve the power, not win 1st place in a car show. any input on web site with this info and a reputable supplier of said engine/trans would be appreciated. thanks for your time.

The 283, (which you probably know came in the '57) or any smallblock with the four mount holes on the front of the block, would bolt in. There are small "L-brackets" that bolt to the front, and they sit on studs and round cushions coming up from the front crossmember. You might find a restoration supplier with mount kits.
I would suggest you use the search engines, like
google, to find a custom transmission crossmember to replace the rear bellhousing mounts used on the original car.

Don't want to stear you away from this forum which is great, but there is a very good 55-57 one called http://www.chevytalk.com
As stated you can put all the small blocks in without a problem. You can even stuff big blocks in there. Just have to change the motor mounts and massage the firewall usaully. As far as purchasing an engine I would deal straight thru GM. They sell crate engines with good warranties.

HOTRODPAINT is correct on all points. The 2 spd. powerglide is a good choice of trans for the 283....and five sevens were originally equipped w/ these transmissions and they'll bold right in to existing mounts (fram to bellhousing). I'd check Ebay motors for rebuildable 283s and powerglides. Good luck!

Take it from me, I dont want to win shows either, dont even go! I like to drive em. I have currently a 283. Its done nice, but is no where near enough power. Go with a nice 350 or a 383 stroker. It may cost you a little extra in the beginning, but sooner or later you're gonna want to crack those tires and a 283 will not move that weight. If the 283 is a must, then hold out another 3 months and you can have mine!
