    '46 Ford hanging brake padal

Hello All - Am trying to find a compatable hanging Brake pedal setup to fit in a 1946 Ford. I have one out of a Nova that is very close but I have to move it about 4-5 inches to the left to miss the ridge that is stamped into the firewall - (can't mount the brake booster/master cylinder over the ridge. Or can I?)and if I move it to the far left to clear the ridge I will have to weld a 3-4"extension to offset the pedal back to the proper side of the steeri ng column - am afraid this might compromise the strength of the pedal - hope this isn't too confusing - many thanks in advance

Charly, I have owned a '48, but it has been a looooooong time ago, so I don't remember what ridge you are describing. Is this where 2 sections of the firewall come together and stick out a little from the plane of the firewall? Can you post a pic?

Hi Richard - The ridge is in the firewall itself - it was probably formed into the firewall to strengthen it - it is not a joint - thanks for your reply - charlyg (really Bill)

As Richard says a picture would be nice. If it's a reinforcement ridge (like my Dodge firewall has in places) a couple thoughts come to mind.

Heat, hammer and dolly the ridge flat where the MC will bolt.

Cut the section out and weld an appropriate piece of flat stock in.

Build a new peddle from flat stock (3/8 or 1/2") and bend to the appropriate shape to move it where needs to be.

If you are running power brakes, the 3/8 will likely work, but if you are running manual brakes I'd use the 1/2".
I've NEVER seen a car come from the factory that couldn't be improved.....

if it just the stamped in ridge, I would space the booster out a little. Use a longer push rod.

    46 Ford pedal

Many thanks for all the replys guys - Think I'll space the Booster out whatever it takes to clear the ridge - Paul's suggestion - also talked to many Brake Booster retailers and they said this would present no problems
