I had a 79 chrysler newyorker 5th avenue ,big nice car, tried the ol pull the battery cable trick to see if alternator was bad, sure enuff it died, cost alot of new tools and time to figure out I fried the electronic spark control...........soo I would use the proper tool.
Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)

got a new alt and the reading on my volt guage inside the car is like night and day from before.
Before it was below 12, the alt wasn't putting out anything.
Now it reads just below 15.

Is this too high? After a long drive the starter cranked faster than I would have thought possible.
