I can hand sharpen down to about 1/8th of an inch on a standard grinder. I would like to buy a real tool grinder so I can sharpen all drill bits, split point and standard, but I cannot afford it.

    try rutland tool at http://www.shoprutlandtool.com

they carry industrial grade equipment and have a giant over 2 inch thick FREE catalog. they have package sets from usa brands to imported brands. if you dont want to order from them then Im sure you can get the same products from other local sources.

when I was looking for a high quality tap and die set I went looking at my local industrial park where you would find many factories. most time you will find a supply store that sells to both factories and walkins. a woman working there gave me this catalog that was bigger than any phonebook I had ever seen. and told me that they dont print a catalog but can get the same things in that book and they can either match or beat ther prices

so get the BIG BOOK. and then call around to see who locally sells what you want.

Well, now that I have one of my own, I guess I could let you in on my secret. If you go onto ebay and search their business and industrial metalworking section for Greenfield, you will see listings for Greenfield Little Giant tap and die sets. These sets are by far, the best hand tap and die sets in existance. 10 size set, 1/4-1/2 inch NF, NC will run you well over $700 through Grainger. I got mine, almost complete for about $50 including shipping. The dies consist of a collar and 2 cutting bits. The bits are replaceable and sharpenable. They are very high quality steel and rarely require shaprening, if ever within your lifetime. The die can be adjusted to cut any thread classification. Their greatest advantage is that they are much more difficult to break than a standard die. I don't know if any of you have done this, but on a standard die the entire piece is tool steel which is very brittle. Greenfield makes the collar for their dies out of mild steel which can withstand a great deal of punishment.

About a year ago we had a "Fastenal" store open up here in town. I believe their products are also available online. It has become my only source for drill bits and fasteners. Good selection, quality, and pricing. Might want to check them out if there is one available in your area.
