valve train organization?
HI,
I have never built or taken apart an engine, but im currently trying to get tools and so furth to be able to build an engine some day. My question is how do you guys keep your valve train organized? Ive been looking at summit and jegs at some valve train organizer trays that they sell made by summit, jazz, and crane cams. I was just wondering if theres any cheaper of a method than those, cuz im sure everyone has or had different methods before they came out.
thanx,
david

4by4 drill some hole in it mark it front make holes in it for lifters make one for the push rods use the push rods to run the rockers thru them this will work you can use you push rod stand to keep track of your springs to use the pushrod to keep them in place use a flat wood bit or forstner bit

I have a block similar to what Pat mentions - works well. If you are going to do a lot of teardown and reassembly, it's sure worth the effort. If you are only going to do this once, or are not sure, just get a cardboard box and poke 8 holes along each long side of the bottom for the pushrods, and glue a couple of egg carton bottoms to it between the pushrods to hold the lifters. Mark everything with a permanent marker on the box. You can also buy those fancy nancy organizers from Summitt, Speedway, JCWhitney, and others.

Zip Lock bags are my favorite for all the bolts, etc. I write "bell housing bolts" on one, "intake bolts" on another, etc. I use a sharpie permanent marker to label them.
I also keep a notepad there, and make drawings of what went where. It's funny how you forget a simple thing like how the cam ecentric goes 6 months after you tore the engine apart. Notes make it much easier when assembly time comes.
I also "borrowed" some 2 litre coke trays from the local 7-11, they are made of plastic, and hold 8 pistons and rods perfectly, upside down.Don........as long as I have projects to finish I can't die

You have to shop out back of the store, about 2 AM is when they run these on sale. (JUST KIDDING) I actually got mine when a 7-11 was damaged in Hurricane Charlie, and they tossed alot of stuff out when cleaning up the debris. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.Don........as long as I have projects to finish I can't die
And a Happy Birthday Wish for Mr. Spears. Hope you can have a great one. :)
