Starter Issues
I have a 1966 Chevrolet Pickup, 4WD 1/2-ton.
I've blown through 4 diffrent starters in a year so far and its starting to get a bit old at this point.
I've checked all over my drive train system and have no idea whats wrong. I cant have a starter on the block for more than a couple of months before it missaligns itself and grinds the living hell out of the flywheel.
I tried pretty much every trouble shooting solution for this problem and nothing works.
The flywheel itself needs to go, however that leaves me with the question as to whether or not the problem goes beyond that. I inherited the vehicle from my grandfather and unfortunatly he was not as kind to the truck as I thought. I've been told the motor is a 327 out of a Corvette and thus I've been buying starters for a 327.
HOWEVER, it seems I cant find ANY v.i.n. numbers on the block or heads and so Im left in the dark as to whether or not it really is. Another issue is that perhaps the motor may be too much for the drive train. Reguardless, this should not be happening.
I have to tear it all apart anyways, but I figured it was worth a shot to ask here so I dont have a reoccurance once I rebuild the truck.
Basicly I have no idea what else to do. I dont want to buy another starter at this point because I have no clue of what exactly is wrong, and now Im unsure if the motor really is a 327. It could be a combination of a innapropriate flywheel and starter or one or the other?

a first gen SBC is a first gen SBC, the starter from a 383 stroker will work on the smallest cubed SBC the 262. you say you have tried everything, but you didnt mention what you have tried exactly. maybe shimming it would fix it? there is a tolerance check you are supposed to do when replacing starters, though most are complacent and just throw a new one on.

I ran across this tonight when I was poking through some boxes in the garage and I thought of your post.

You can just get another ring gear for the flywheel instead of replacing the whole thing.
This is on the flip side.

Like I said, I ran through the trouble shooting solutions, one of them would be shimming the starter and it produced results for a bit but then it was back to the same thing.
Im not sure if I can replace the ring gear since its an automatic transmission and the flywheel is one piece?

I don't think the ring gear is replaceable either. At least a new flexplate isn't as much as a new M/T flywheel. Probably cheaper than a couple new starters.
I wanted to complain about this NZ slang business, but I see it was resolved before it mattered. LOL..
