    fan relays

I have a Lincoln elecrtric fan installed in my 48 GMC.

The fan pulls aprox. 40 amps on low speed & 80 on high.I will use one 40 amp relay for low speed & 2 40 amp relays wired in parallel for high speed.

I have been trying to find 40 amp relays w/a diode to prevent spikes.

If anyone has a sorce for these relays please let me know.

    Thanks Don

Not to doubt your info, but I see no way any fan pulls 80 amps, or even 40. Please recheck this data.

2nd, you can't rig 2 40's to get 80. Doesn't work that way. You can't split up 12 volts to run thru each and divide it up that way.

Starter motors don't even take 80 amps.

Again, not trying to say you are wrong, but I think the data is flawed.

Even start up amps would take battery cable to flow 80 amps.

I've been wrong a million times in my life, but I just can't see any fan taking this much amperage.

Yeah, I think those numbers are more in line, amp-wise.

And to go back to the original question, just use a 40 amp relay on low and one on high. There should be more than sufficient capacity to handle any fan. I wouldn't worry about spikes, as the fans are probably engineered to handle such problems internally. At least, I have never had to install a diode and have pretty much run electric fans for the past 12 years on everything I have.

Like I said, if I had a nickel for everytime I've been wrong.............

The Lincoln mark VIII does draw 80 amps on high speed at start-up & 40 at steady running. Low side is 40 & 25. amps.Below is some info on this fan & wiring a fan using 2 relays. This fan has been talked about on this forum & the amp draw has been substatiated .http://alanhorvath.com/54chevy/mad_electrical_2.php

I did not find any 40 amp fans on the above posts..........thank-you
