    65 Charging System Questions

My 65 battery will not charge, I have replaced the alternator, starter and selenoid, voltage regulator, and capacitor, new battery cables and ground straps and the F&*K&R still goes dead! At idle I am getting 13.1 volts to the battery at 2000 rpm. What and the heck am I missing? Oh yea I have a new battery in the car also. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

toro, my best advice is STOP GUESSING!!!! And, unless you enjoy throwing more money at the car that might not solve the problem, DON'T LISTEN TO OTHER PEOPLE'S GUESSING!!

Find the best automotive electrical technician in your area and have them find the "leak", you've likely got a circuit that is constantly on or short to ground. If you were handy with a VOM you could probably do it yourself, but based on the list of parts you've thrown at the car I suspect you don't have that type of experience.

Take a test light and remove the pos. battery cable, hook up the wire on the test light to the Neg battery post and hold the test light between the pos post of the battery and the loose battery terminal. If the test light lights up you have a draw. Have a freind start pulling fuses one by one until the light goes out, if a fuse makes the light go out then you've found the circut that has the short and you can trace it from there. If all the fuses are pulled and the light is still lit, then your short is (on a GM) between the battery and the starter Sol. or the wires from the sol to the egn. switch, you can cont. with the same proc. by removing the wires one by one from the sol.

yep they still had those and like streets said, if ya dont polarize it they wont work, but also I have found in every caddy my parents of I have owned they had a problem like this & it turned out to be either the headlite switch or the cig. lighter that caused the problem.............joe

The new voltage reg has the rivets, where on the alternator do I touch that jumper wire to? I know nothing on the electrical, Got nailed with 220 when I was really young and I am still very gun shy of that sort of thing!!
