i'm pretty sure the master cyilinders designed for use with the power boosters are going to need one to work right. With the vehicle being four wheel drum brakes, you can really benefit from the extra power of the booster. I'd say just fix the rod problem and go back to running the booster..
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.
