SBC oil temperature sender (where can I buy an adapter)
I was down at the local parts emporium today, and was talking to a gold chainer about his Corvette. He has a chev small block in it, and wants to add an oil temperature sending unit. He doesn't want to pull the pan off it, and aparently it is not a corvette original equipment engine. I said that I think you can buy an adapter that screws into the place where the oil filter goes, and then the oil filter screws into it. This adapter has the oil temperature sending unit in it. He gave me his email address, and I said I would find a source and let him know where to get one. Now I'm at home, and after a brief internet search, I can't find one. this is a oil cooler adapt. he might could rig up if he wanted to. this fits a 350 and this one J.C. Whitney has it, other wise i think he'll have to pull the pan.Mike

Regarding the oil cooler adapter, he cannot use one that diverts the oil thru the cooler and returns it to the filter because he will be blocking off the flow of oil by screwing the temp sender into either the inlet or outlet ports. IF the adapter diverts only part of the flow, it might work. Also, he has to put the sender in the output side.
Isnt there a plug just above the oil filter boss that is into an oil port?.....but that's not a place to measure pan oil temp.
By the way, why does he need to measure oil temp? It's only something else for him to worry about. He can use Mobil 1 or some other high temp oil and quit worrying.

i guess you are right, but i was thinking that it would be more like using a filter by pass set up without the by pass filter hooked up. i'm thinking a filter will screw to the bottom of that adapt. if it want it cant work. i wouldn't put it there anyway, just an idea.Mike

Like I said---the guy was a goldchainer. When I asked him why he wanted to monitor oil temperature, his response was "well aren't you supposed to?". He had spent a fortune on custom gauges to put in his Corvette. Somebody had done a real sell job on him, and included an oil temp gauge in a set!!! Now he hasn't the faintest idea where to hook it up to. I suggested that he have a bung welded to the oilpan, but he was kinda horrified at the thought of removing the pan to do that. He wanted a bolt on solution.Old guy hot rodder

My '93 Vette has a stock oil temp gauge. No idea how it's hooked up.Jack

couldn't he put a T in the block where the oil preassure sender threads into, and put the temp sender on the other side of the T?You don't know what you've got til it's gone

i've always run mechanical gauges and you needed some where to put the bulb. i guess the elec. ones dont need all that room.Mike
