292 has offset motor mounts, a 230 or 250 has motor mounts that are directly across from each other...... or did I dream this?

It's much easier to promise someone a "free" ride on the wagon than to urge them to pull it.

Then its probably a 292, We have one in our 68 GMC 1 ton service truck. Motors same as yours, dist. closer to the rad. The main problem is the exhaust manifolds cracking. But hard to kill those engines our 68 had a screw from the carb fall into the engine. Beat the heck out of the valve and scratched the cylinder and went out the exhaust years ago. They sleeved the cylinder, redid the valve/seat (maybe entire head but I can't remember what my dad told me they did to the head exactly) used the original piston and it still runs strong today. That thing will start every time even in -30 celsuis winter temperatures. Lol dad said you could see the mark where the screw hit the piston but it was fine other then a scratch.

292's are truck engines, never in cars. If it runs okay, its a good engine for your truck. Lots of aftermarket goodies available for show and go. Ita a torquer, so a taller rear end ratio would be the first thing to do. Or overdrive. Any Chevy tranny will fit, same bellhousing as V8's.

the weak point of the 292 is the head gaskets. don't take much to blow one.

According to my research that casting number is for a 230 or 250 block between 1962 and 1978. There should also be a date code cast into the block somewhere that would help you pin down the year.
