straightening metal
Ok since the 49 went into storage until the new garage is built. I am pulling out the touring car again to start working on it.
I can't find the thread before on how to straighten the metal of the rear "tub" section. For those that don't remember, the rear section behind the rear doors has a crease in the metal. Its from where the body sat for years under dirt, so that the metal above the rear fender bent over itself.
I was thinking of using heat to "weaken" the metal to bend it back into place, but have recently heard that all that will do is strenghthen the crease. How is it you can heat a dent but not a crease/bend? Would hammering be better for this? I tried in the past and got no where with the bend by hammering it, Didn't use a dolly, just a piece of angle iron under it.
Any ideas on what will work for this?
Thanks

I have a video that shows a body man removing a bead roll in a panel with a tourch and a hammer and dolly. You couldn't even tell it was there. One of the problems with heat, is it will cause the area to shrink. It's very hard to tell without looking at your car to tell what is the best route to take. I have never tried to take a crease out of a panel but, I don't believe heat will make the crease stronger. As far a using heat on a dent, the metal in a dent is stretched, and to get the panel straight agian will require a little heat and a wet rag to shrink the metal back into general shape. Then you can use a hammer and dolly to finish the job.

there is more than one way to do this you can use a slapping spoon that will shrink or a shrinking hammer both you would use a dolly to work as a backer and sometimes heat i have used all the above but you may not want to use heat less you know what you are doing and you can over work the metal to so go slowIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip
