Reground camshafts
Now that I have already bought a new stock grind camshaft, I think I'd rather have a mid-range grind instead. This because I'll be pulling a travel trailer or a car trailer occasionally.
Yeah, I know. I should have thought of that sooner.
I would like somebody's opinion of re-ground cams. Some companies offer new camshafts to fit the buyer's needs or, to satisfy us CSOB's, they'll sell you a regrind that's ground to the same specs as a new one for quite a bit less money.
A reason to buy one is, of course, money, but there must be reasons NOT to buy one. Would a regrind have less surface hardness than a new one (or maybe less "wearability" if there is such a word)? I have bought camshafts in the distant past (when I was drag racing) but never a regrind.
I would appreciate the opinions of some of the CHR engine wizards who keep the rest of us out of trouble.
Thanks,
Jim

A problem with a regrind is the base circle of the lobe must be smaller, so the valve geometry is all wrong unless you get new, longer pushrods, which offsets any initial savings. New is worth the extra nickel.

Good point, Pope. That sounds reasonable.
I appreciate the input.
