I am adding duel 97s on a 51 merc and am putting an electric fuel pump by the tank.would it be ok for me to splice into the fuel gauge sensor wire or do i have to run a wire up to the ignition?

NO NO NO!!!!!You need a switched relay or.... you will burn!!! LOw voltage kills pumps and when u run a wire that long thru a switch, well things get hot in a hurry!!Its also a good idea to put in a oil saftey switch.
Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)

As was stated above Don't do that It wouldn't work anyway. Run a seperate lead thru a relay off a switched fused source(ignition switch)

And remember 97's don't like much fuel pressure at idle or they will fluid.
