    "porous" block

I have a friend with a '69 Ford 429 engine in his Torino. It leaks coolant right from the iron on the side of the block.

We ran it on the lift at work to verify the leak...it only happens at operating temperature, pressurizing the cooling system has no effect on it. It leaks between the second and third expansion plug. There are NO cracks or holes.

I called the local Ford Guru, and he said "just take you a brass punch and a hammer there, and start at the middle of the wet spot and work your way around in a circle until it stops leaking".

I assume he means that the block is porous there, and that hitting it correctly with a blunt instrument will "rearrange" it enough to seal the metal.

    ???

or ya could try what an old timer did for a friend of mine car back in 1970, the guy had a low mileage 63 chevy that he got from his grandpa, welllllllllllllll he thought it would be ok to drive it with straight water in it which would of been fine except a few days after he got it home the temp dropped like a rock to well below freezing and he didnt drain the block. well we all know what happened next, yep the block froze & cracked .. so old Newt (at the City Service Gas Station )pulled the motor and heated the crack up & poured hot patch roofing tar into the crack and then did the same to the outside. Well that motor was on the street well into the 80's... now couldnt just see the guys eyes who may have gotten that motor down the road and wondered WTF is this ............joe

It never leaked until he rebuilt it and had it "tanked".

Apparently, enough sediment and goo had built up in the water jackets to stop the leak.

I told him to run straight water in it come springtime, and hope the hole (crack, porosity, whatever) seals itself again.
