    steering conversion in a 57 chevy

     



    want power steering and a smaller steering wheel,maybe put a whole new column in?if i put a new column in what can i use?any help will be appreciated!!!thanx

    i doubt if anything would look good except the stock column. you can change the steering wheel and add power steering without changing the complete column.

    They make whats called a 506 gearbox its a remake of a stock later modle gearbox. You can make your own. You just have to watch out for gearbx location. some are front some are rear steer. The 57 is rear(meaning the gear box is behind the steering assembly. Most late modle cars are front meaning the gear box in ahead of the steering assembly. I'm not in the shop now but will look in the morning and get some parts store names if you want them.
    I think Danchuck is one that carries the gearbox you are looking for.

    To remove the column you will have to remove the gear box. There are ways to change one or the other or both. I have done this and its not that difficult.

    thanx for your replies i have already installed rack and pinion and removed old steering column parts are warn steering column is in bad shape.was wondering what kind of column can be converted to fit or the best way to go.

    Which R & P did you use? Is it front or rear. I would beleave a 67/72 C10 column would work but the length is the question.

    use a 78 Chevy van or earlyer. No key lock . looks nice.

    Ididit and a few other companies make columns custom fit for the tri-5's. Very nice but kind of spendy...
