Take off your belt and threaten it with a good butt-beating. It should go right into reverse, with maybe a little whimpering. Be stern.

Reverse is torn out. Shifter is out of adjustment. Operator error.

what is the trans model? some Vw trans's don't like to stay in certin gears, eat up syncros and other problems. Call 1-800 VW parts and talk to Eric, there a VW specific junkyard here in NY but ship anywhere. 90% of the VW crowd around the country knows about them. Eric will be able to get the parts/ advice you need to get it working.
You don't know what you've got til it's gone
