    34 chevy

I have a 34 chevy with the stock straight I beam front end and im wanting to change it over to disk brakes and make it drive better. I was just wondering if anyone has done this before and maybe can tell me the best cheapest way to go about doing this. I have a 1940 model front end also, which would be best to use to update from kingpin out?I been told that 1953 or54 car backing plates & drums will work with some work on them. Wanting to use a vega steering box, car has 350sbc and a turbo 350 runs good just wanting to make it more drivable, and im wanting to be able to drive with my son after he finishes his blown sbc in a 78 280z.

Let me see if I can give you a little bump to give this thread some added life.

You say you have the stock front end now, which would be I beam axle and two parallel springs. You also mention having a '40 front end available. If it were me, I would either update the stock front end with maybe a dropped axle from someone like Speedway, then you could also buy their modified '49 to '54 spindles and bolt on disc brakes...........or, you could install one of the independent front end setups like a Mustang II. I would stay away from the '40 front end as they weren't all that swift, and you would gain nothing.

The most simple way would be the dropped straight axle route, and I am sort of partial to these anyway as they work reasonably well and look good.

thanks for that. I was just trying to save the 300 or 400 $ that a bell straight axel was going to set me back, then I would still have to bye spindles & disc brake setup to go with it.thay tell me that I can put 53or54 chevy car backing plates and drums can work with a little worke. that is on my 1940 chevy spindles. after market chevy parts are hard to find.I have a 1934 coupe highboy just trying to get it to drive better.
