    Front tire question?

Im thinking of getting a pair of Mickey Thompson sportsman front tires for the 40 dodge coupe street strip project. (the eight plys) I asked their tech dept for a speed rating and they say there is no rating. The info says they are suitable for drag racing. Can I assume they are good for 150+ mph? Anybody out there have experience with them on the strip. I want to use these for street and strip on the front. The backs I will switch back and forth between the sportsmans for street and slicks for the strip.

    thanks

Not sure about the MT fronts, I always run the Goodyear Front Runners, then a regular radial tire on the street. A tire can be good for 150 in a short blast (drag racing) and be absolutely worthless on a public highway at 65 mph....

Ya Dave Im not sure about them either. A lot of people use them but I dont know anyone who does. Its not a radial and would probably do ok on the street but im not sure. I just want a street/strip front so I wont have to switch fronts. I want slicks for the strip and I have an extra set of wheels for that but dont want to have to change all four to go to the track. Im sure there is a suitable front tire for what im looking for but am not sure the MT sportsman is it.

No experience, but commons sense tells me, this would not be good combination for street, except maybe short sprints around town. Basically made for strip, not highway safe.

Do some people do it? Sure, but if you have an accident you could be held liable because of running tires not designed for safe highway use. You were looking for the best advice, that is my opinion.

    UPDATE--------------------------------------------------

I phoned Mickey Thompson Tires, spoke to Jeremy in Customer Service. He says yes they are DOT approved, and safe for highway use. Iwas wrong. I asked him the same question twice, and he confirmed that is correct.

    Sorry for my mistaken opinion.

Just my 2 cents ,but plastic air hose is dot approved and we all know how that stuff gets in about 5 years of heat ,vibration and who knows what else.
No rating tells me its unlimited as far as speed is concerned,I have heard nothing but bad about these types of tires on the street, low mileage ,bad handling and funny wear, not to mention the fact a bicycle tire has better stoping power The front tires do most of the stopping work, high horsepower ,big rear tires and fast acceleration mixed with bad turning and bad braking, seems awful to me,but they sure look cool!!
Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)

Thanks guys, ya Denny that the tire (in the 8 ply). I think Im going to give them a try. This car will see limited street use and I think they will work out OK.
