GM A- Body A.C. Removal
Any body know how many bolts there is to remove the unit attached to the firewall? It's hard to see underneath it and I was wondering if it's possible to remove this with out taking out the engine. The car is a Monte with a big block.

1970. This is the same car that I'm having trouble getting the #8 plug out of. If I remove this thing it will help quite abit.

I'm with you Mike in fact I think it would be easier to pull the engine than the A/C box.Charlie

Surely worst case is ,take tire off, hole saw in the inner fender and some sort of fancy wobble head ratchet with wobble head sockets or some sort of flexable extention? Then just put a rubber grommet/plug into the hole in the inner fender ,most inner fenders are plastic after the late 60s.
If you are getting ride of a/c permanent make sure any open hole from this is sealed up with a metal plate with sealant around the edges.Carbon monoxide and fire are no fun in the passenger compartmentIts gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)

the box is like an inch and a half away from the header. The headers have big tubes, Hooker Super Comps I think, and the plug points right into a the number 6 tube. I can work a socket down there but it won't even fit onto the plug all the way because it hits that #6 tube. I will try underneath, but don't think that will work either. I'm not planning on running the AC anyway and was going to get that block off plate that allows you to keep you fan motor and heat.

My 68 Camaro had a plug that I had to use an off-set box wrench to change.Charlie

why don't you cut a plug socket in half,so it will fit on your plug.weld a
bar or something to what ever shape you need to clear , use it as an open end wrench!!!!!!!!!

a wrench is the only way he's gonna get it out, without taking the headers loose. i don't see how you gonna get a socket on it.Mike

some pictures of this invincible plug and header combo might help to better say how to fix it. I can't image that a wrench from the underside of the car wouldn't take it out. Worse comes to worse, its not that hard to lay the header back a few centimeters...
Wow, that is sweet! The woodwork is gorgeous.
