Thread: 1984 Corvette Ground Problem

Hello all -
This may be a surprise, but I'm having a ground problem in my Corvette.... my question, simply put, is - does anybody happen to know specifically where the main grounds are in the 1984 Corvette - I have schematic diagrams of the electrical system, but they do not indicate where on the car the grounds are. If anybody knows where they are (particularly the ones in the rear) and can describe them for me, I would greatly appreciate it.

If anybody is interested in the details of my problem, here goes....
I bought the car last year taken apart (somebody decided the car needed the heads redone at 52000 miles and never finished the project). I put the engine back together and have been driving the car, but have noticed several electrical problems along the way:
1. When I turn the interior courtesy lights on, the hatchback opens.
2. For a long time, whenever I would get in the car after not driving it for a few days, the passenger side rearview mirror was moved - also, if not driven for 10 days or more, the battery would be dead - my assumption was the mirror was drawing power constantly and draining the battery. The mirror has since stopped moving on its own, but also no longer moves with the switch, so I think the motor may have burned out.
3. Most recently, the fuel pump that I had put in the car about 12 months prior went bad - I didn't think too much of it and replaced it, though I did make sure that I had adequate voltage at the pump when the car was running. About 2 weeks later the new pump failed - I did some more testing and confirmed again that there was adequate voltage at the pump. It will happen on occasion so I (hopefully) assumed I'd got a bad pump and had it replaced under warranty - this was about a month ago. Well, the fuel pump has failed again, so I'm beyond believing I'm just having bad luck with fuel pumps (I did have to replace the fuel pump in my daily driver - a Ford Taurus - in the midst of all this).
I'm thinking at this point that I probably have a bad or weak ground somewhere and getting some sort of grounding back through the fuel pump causing the pumps to burn out. If anybody has any thoughts on my problem, I'd appreciate the input.

I don't remember where all the specific grounds are on the mid 80's Vettes, but I do recall that a bad dash ground was common. The simpilest cure was to run a wire from the dash grounds (I believe there was 3 separate ones) directly to the chassis. As for the mirror, sounds like a bad switch. At the cars age, it is past due the time to clean and tighten all grounds, replace broken, frayed, or hardened ground wires, and spend a bunch of time doing resistance checks and voltage loss checks on every electrical circuit in the car.... Ain't fiberglass wunnerful????
