Gas Tank Modifications...Need help
Instead of buying a new stainless steel tank for my 39 Chevy coupe, I want to ask about what it may take to modify my stock tank to accept an electric fuel pump. Can anyone recommend a shop in the Dallas area or anywhere else in the country that can modify gas tanks?
$800 for a new tank is a little expensive and my old tank is in good shape.

Surf your way over to www.tanksinc.com. I think they might even have a replacement tank for your car. Those tanks are set up for an electric fuel pump for EFI if that's what you need. They are also baffled. Most tanks run about $200 and the pump is about the same. That's where I got the tank and pump for my conversion and am quite pleased. I just checked and they do list one for a 39 Chevy passenger car:

They also have a replacement neoprene tank.

P.S. Putting the electric pump in the tank is desirable becase the fuel in the tank cools the pump, and the pumps last longer. It is also much quieter. Those are just two reasons all the OEMs are doing it that way now.Last edited by Stu Cool; 01-22-2007 at 12:28 PM.
Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong!

I have a 3 passenger 39 coupe, which means the tank is behind the seat and nobody but rock valley makes a tank...$855. I would like an in the tank fuel pump for noise reasons rather than an external unit.
I don't think modififying my tank for an in-tank fuel pump would be hard, but I just can't fin any info on how to do it. I need a minimum of 50psi/35gph.
The local radiator shops won't touch it unless its to clean the tank only.

I like the link Stu Cool showed you can use their bolt on FI fuel pump for around 250.
Or for 450 you get a new tank and pump. Nice ,clean ,perfect fit ,and FI fuel pump thats pretty good for a new tank and set-up.Last edited by BigTruckDriver; 01-22-2007 at 08:04 PM.

LOL my 5.0 has a pump in the tank and its the loudest noise on the car when its running Maybe a stock 4 cylinder pump is quiet,/anything that feeds any kind of hp will make lots of noise.
My pump is not that big either and its the first question I always get, whats that buzzing sound
Good luck on quiet in the tank.
My current hotrod has the pump mounted on the frame with rubber isolators and braided hose about 10 inches long on both the input and output and seems to be much more quiet than the in the tank deal and alot more repair friendly,/.....have you ever tried to change a in the tank pump with 8 or 10 gallons of gas still in there? not fun.......Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)
