well you do have a GM 12 bolt truck rear end... there beefy but if you want more, a 9" ford can be got from Currie or Moser, to fit your truck.
You don't know what you've got til it's gone

the oval rear end has a 7.5 ring gear, and the round 10 bolt has a 8.5 ring gear. the 7.5 will not be a desirerable choice for your ponies to stay in the corall. i think the axles are smaller diameter in that 7.5 rear also, you better find a round housing 8.5, or a 12 bolt for a direct bolt in application, either of these chevy rears are good choices. or spend a bit more for the ford 9 inch.

With that kind of horsepressure and torque, I would be going for a 9" Ford with at least 31 spline axles. I hate spending money on parts twice. The investment in a 9" with good parts inside will give you many miles of trouble free performance....

Whereabouts in Houston do you live? I have some family there and go visiting a couple times every year....

With the gears, new axles, and a new housing, Posi, everything I would imagine in the neighborhood of $1500 or more. Depends on how good a shopper you are.

I'll be sure to get hold of you next time I'm heading down there.

Is it a Dana 60? Could be a 44, but that seems small for the rear of a big block truck.

A Dana 60 with floating axles is tougher than a 9" Ford. Put a posi unit in it and go.

I still much prefer the 9" Fords, if for no other reason then changing gears is so much easier. I always have another center section or three on the shelf with different gear ratio's for different occasions. As for the floater axles, I like them on circle burners, dragsters, and farm trucks. Just don't like the looks of the big huge hubs on the street. Are they tougher??? Maybe, depends on how they're set up and what components are used. As with anything, we all have our own preferences and opinions...

I would go Ford 9", with gearsets from somewhere about 2.5 to 7.5:1 readily available. There are several types of traction devices you can get as well from Equaloc, Auburn, Torsen, Detroit Locker to name a few

The gears in the diff you now have are possibly a stump puller ratio(4.56 or maybe steeper) and not suitable for a daily driver - unless you like contributing even more $$ to the likes of the ExxonMobil cartels.

I think it is a dana 60 so that would be good right!!! But what markings dop I need to look for to make sure it is a dana 60? Also I belive the gear is 4.56 but might be 4.10. I was told when I bought it they were 4.56. I had a Eaton in my 99 Z71 I liked it alot can I get one for this axle?
