quick way to disable steering lock on a 79 camaro

Bought another parts car but it didn't come with a key and when the guy delivered it to my house he kind of dumped it sideways in my driveway and i have to get it moved by tommorow morning.

i know people who steal cars can break those things in seconds but i spent about 20 min trying to figure something out before i figured i would ask someone.

I don't need the ignition or the steering lock or even the steering column so i don't care what it takes i just need to be able to steer it to move it.

couple of different ways to do it, easiest is to jamb a flathead screwdriver into the hole with hammer persuasion and turn it with a wrench.

Hehe, I had a fairmont I didn't get the key to so I started trying to get the lock out. After all, if any 12 year old kid can do it in 10 seconds, I should be able to.

One hour later, and with a totally destroyed column I got the darned lock out. How these kids learn to do it is a mystery to me.......they can't read or write, but the inner workings of a steering column are no problem to them.

That's the difference between education and training. For those that don't understand what I mean by that, for the sake of argument, suppose you have a teenage daughter, would you want her to receive sex education or sex training?

Yeah I guess it's all a matter of perspective.

Absolutely, and just so my point doesn't get misinterpreted, I guess all I was trying to say was that I'd bet none of them could explain the inner workings of a steering column; but somebody has shown them how to punch the lock.

You could just undo the rag joint in the steering shaft and turn the wheels with a Vise Grip. Or get a buddy with arms like Popeye and crank the wheel til stuff busts. Seen that done more than once.

Wow I can still remember when they first put the steering column locks on saying how it would cut theft to some amazing degree followed by a zillion others features over the years. They're still stealing cars and WE have to pay more for all the dubious anti-theft stuff on the cars. Walks away mumbling....
