fan wiring
I just picked up a electric fan at a swap meet, but it has a three prong plug in and I dont know whats hot and whats a ground. Is there a way to tell what is hot or ground with an ohms meter or some other way.I dont want to risk burning this up.

That would be a 2 speed fan motor. I don't think you will burn it up by 'trying" the different terminals. one terminal will be ground, one will be high speed, one will be low speed.Old guy hot rodder

First of all how many wires are in the three pin plug ? Probly 2. You should probably find out if it's a pusher or a puller, If there are 2 wires just hook it up to your battery and determine if it is turning the correct way, if it's not reverse the pos and neg. Applying power with the polarity reversed to the fan for the short period of time will not damage the fan motor.

You may have to use a relay and or wire it backwards as I melt switches with mine. The two wires that are not black are for two speeds, one normal one fast. I went to a 25 amp fuse to stop the melting. Plus I ran a dirrect hot wire to the fan and the ground threw the switch.

As Nova said, the fan will work best with a relay and save a lot of wear and tear on your wiring!!!!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!
