Turning a 1940 chevy 2 DR sedan into a coupe

    Hello to all,
I am rebuilding a 1940 Chevy master delux (2 doors) sedan.I have always wanted to have a coupe .I was looking at it today and I got this wild idea that maybe I could turn this sedan into a coupe!I started taking measurements of the roof and quarter windows and realized that I could cut the roof and quarter windows a good 8" to 10" and move the rear window saction that much ahead. All I would have to do next would be to fabricate a piece of sheet metal to fill in the gap that would be left. I'm looking at it and can't stop thinking that it is doable.Has anyone ever attempted this before with any succes?I've been working on this beast for two whole years now and would hate to mess up all my work .....But I want a coupe! Can anyone advise me on this?

Have you ever chopped a late 30's car with all of the compound curves? And were you successful in your chop? If not, you will be biting off a major project as a first time job. It has been done on Fords; recently one of the magazines had an article. This is not a minor task!! It might be easier to find a decent coupe body and swap it in....and cheaper in the long run.

Anything is doable with enough time, patience, talent and money and you might pull this one off. My first impression is though, that you are going to turn a nice old body into a POS if you're not a well-experienced body/sheet metal man.

I agree with robot on this one. I'd try to trade for a coupe or sell the sedan and buy a coupe body.

find a 4 door because the rear quarters are the same as a coupe & then u can use the top of the rear doors to the curve for the front doors. also look on http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/index.php? for the 4door to 2 door convertion. LOTS of folks have done it & it may help you IF you still want to do it.....joe
