they fit either way....do you want to gear up or gear down?
    The gears are a set.
The lower shaft is the input.

If you put the smaller gear on the input, you are gearing
lower (numerically higher). The ratio of the two gears
is multiplied by the ring and pinion ratio.

A lot of installations run a 1:1 ratio on the the gears
if the ring and pinion is a 3:73.

I was asking a question to your question and the light bulb went off in my head. Never mind, I understand your intitial question now. Smaller gear is your drive gear for that set.

question is the car is street use , i bought a set of gears to achieve 374 ratio , now the gears will go on either way in the rear cover but which one goes on top and which on bottom ?? the input shaft is on the bottom , does that mean the larger one goes there or the small one?

Set 20 is a 20 tooth gear and a 26 tooth gear. From the Winters page
http://www.wintersperformance.com/ca.../index1024.htm On page 18 there is a chart
if you put the 20 on the bottom, you will have a 3.17
if you put the 20 on the top you will have a 5.36

These are from the 10 spline 4.12 ring and pinion chart.
If you have six spline gears, look at the other chart.

If your gears have 20 and 26 teeth, put the 20 on top and the 26 on bottom. That with a 4.86:1 ring and pinion will give you 3.738:1 final.

The formula is.... tooth count top gear/tooth count bottom gear X ring & pinion ratio
