I generally end up using my tools on other people's cars... Once, several years ago, a group of about 8 or 9 of us were caravanning home from a rod run when one of the cars spit its harmonic balancer off. Fortunately, the balancer and pulley got trapped by the front crossmember so weren't lost. At the time we were about 80 miles from home. Even with AAA, the tow bill would have been exhorbitant that far. Thankfully, I was carrying my usual assortment of tools; in about 20 minutes we were back on the road and made it home without further incident. Nowdays I carry a basic tool kit in all my cars.

Lots of good suggestions here. I carry a good asst of tools, duct tape, good electrical tape, some electrical connectors, a bit of wire, a Clamp Tool, and since last year a good chisel.

I broke a lower ball joint on my MII front end pulling into the field at the Nationals in Louisville last year. The NAPA booth inside was able to order me a ball joint, but I needed a chisel to get out the rivets on the old one. I finally found one in the swap meet.

I also now carry a spare mini-starter, since those might be hard to find in some rural places, and I never leave home w/o my Gold AAA card.
