AN fittings & cutting fuel line....
.....Hi Everyone, What's the best way to cut Stainless Steel Braided Fuel Line Hose??? {short of one of those 'official cutters'}. Cut off wheel on a small grinder, hack saw or ??? Also how tight do you tighten the AN fittings that go onto the Stainless Hose when your attaching the hose??? I read where your not suppose to over-tighten the AN fitting but does this also apply to when your attaching the hose ends??? THANKS BILL

One turn of masking tape around the braided line in the cut area helps to keep the braid from fraying....the thin tape can be inserted into the nut portion of the fitting also. If you use duct tape, it is too thick and will not allow you to push the nut part on the hose.
Insert the barb into the hose until the end of the hose if fully seated. Then tighten the nut completely to capture the hose....you should tighten it snug but dont throw all your weight into it....I would estimate 25 ft lbs is good.
Cutting hose can be done with a sheet metal shear, a thin cutoff wheel, even a thin cutoff in a dremel tool. A hacksaw makes for a ragged cut in my opinion. I have also used a large pair of handheld shears but they have to be tight....otherwise you will have several strands of uncut braid. A good shear is the easiest and fastest. Blow the hose out after you assemble it!!!
Get a box of band aids. As a rule of thumb, the larger the size, the easier it is to assemble.

I've never tried it. I put a hose clamp around it and use a cut-off wheel. Then I grind down any stray strands sticking out with the cut-off wheel, or touch it to my bench grinder. The hose clamp keeps it from fraying long enough for you to insert it into the ferrule.
I never had any luck with the tape, but that's just me.
You're supposed to tighten the ferrule until there is a small gap between it and the nut. I don't remember the size of the gap.
Finally, use good hose - Earls or Aeroquip. Summit hose was a PITA.Last edited by Henry Rifle; 08-16-2007 at 05:57 PM.

The hose clamp is a great idea to keep the ends from fraying. I used a similar method using those plastic zip ties...tighten it enough so it stays put, then cut the hose with a dremel cut off wheel. Push the fitting on while leaving the zip tie in place to hold back the fraying. As you push the fitting on the hose the zip tie will slide away down the hose. Voila! Of course a little oil helps the fitting slide onto the hose.

I use the metal tape. the frayed ends don't come thru. the hose clamp sounds good.

I like the Earl's Way!!! I am going to see about the masonry hammer. that seems a lot better than getting out the grinder.
