My '85 Cougar had one on the tranny tailshaft. One night coming home from the Dog Track I heard an explosion, and my gas gauge started dropping real fast. I got off the interstate and had the car towed home because there was a huge gash in the fuel tank.

Come to find out that weight broke away from the tranny and bounced up and ruined the tank. Ford had a recall and extended the warranty to 50,000 miles, but my car had 50,300 on it and they refused to make it good. When I threatened to sue them they guy on the phone said "go ahead buddy, we have tons of Attorneys on staff just waiting for some work!"

Needless to say, I bought my own tank and fixed it, but never bought another new Ford after that.

Pretty rotten of Ford! But not the first or last bad story I've heard about Ford doing right by it's customers. Don't blame you for the boycott.
We had a Plymouth Neon that was several thousand miles out of warranty when the trans died. Seem that there was a recall on it that was not sent out to us. Chrysler stil repaired the trans, all we paid for was the fluids. Much better wat to treat customers.
