gaskets and silicone
what's the best way to seal up water pumps, thermostats housings and such? is it still necessary to use those paper gaskets plus silicone or just silicone? is there some type of gasket-maker that is better?Andy

well i never had any leaky oil pans
the cheap pans some times fit up is not to good that were you need the RTV
i really do not have any problems if you get your hands on OMC type M you will need dynamite to get any thing off you glue down with it .

I really haven't kept up with the times regarding sealants. I still like good old Permatex # 2, and Hylomar. We just used RTV on my Kids engine because he insists it is more modern, therefore better. I'm still in the dark if that is really true or not. And yes, I always use gaskets, except on the front and rear of intake manifolds, where I put a bead of RTV.

yes i use RTV on the china walls on the intake to or were poor fit up is encountered .if the gaskets has O rings on it i like to put some slip on it like on the intake i will use some white grease or permatex non dryingIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

On my Ford thermostat housing gaskets, I just use plain ordinary good contact cement to hold the gasket on which in turn holds the thermostat in place, in the housing (remember that pot metal housing that you broke at 9:05 on a Friday night? And your girlfriend was waiting for you to pick her up at 10:00 after work at the grocery store. And you didn't make it?). I have yet to have one leak. Any other gaskets that require a sealer - I'll use the manufacturers recommendations.

Depends on the gasket. Valve covers, High Tack to glue the gasket to the cover, thin coat of silicone on the head side. Intakes get a bead of hylomar around the intake ports, thin coat of silicone around the water jackets (Both sides). Water outlet gets a Victor tuff-cork gasket with a thin coat of silicone on both sides. Header gaskets...Victor Nitro-seal gaskets wiht a bead of ultra copper around both sides of the port.

Copper Coat spray for head gaskets. Permatex #2 everywhere else.Every time I have tried RTV I ended up with a leak somewhere.
