Should be the same as a Vega . Also change the fuel pump & screen that is in the tank . I had to change the fuel pump on my 1974 Vega on the highway ! With 3/4 a tank of fuel ! It was not fun . There is a plug with 4 pins that goes to the tank . Unplug it before dropping the tank . Also check the plug to see if the pins are rusted up .

gas tank help!
anyboody have any idea how to remove a gas tank on a 75 pontiac astre. charlie's tank has holes in it and we need to remove it to see about repair or replacement. The car is suppose to be exactly like a monza or vega. It is a H body. Have taken off the straps but am stuck after that.BARB

1975 Pontiac Astre fuel tank R/R
Go to the posting made by Novanutcase on 11/25/07 at 2.00am This will tell you how to look up a free manual on this car . If you can not find the Astre look up a 1975 Vega . This really works and it also shows photos of the jobs .

That is to bad about the free manuals . I did change the fuel pump in my 1974Vega . But that was like 25years ago . But I do remember some . On the side filler gas cap remove the cap then remove the screws that mount the filler tube to the body . I think there are 3 screws . unplug the 4pin power plug near the side of the tank . Place a floor jack under the old tank . Spray the tank strap bolts with WD40 this will help to remove the rusted bolts/nuts . Remove both strap bolts . Let the tank down easy just so you can see the lines . Cut the 2 fuel hoses as close as you can to the tank . Do not pull on the hoses to remove them or you will damage the fuel sending unit . Also you might have a small ground wire that you will have to unscrew from the body . If you can not unscrew it cut it close to the body and install a new end when installing the new tank . When you get the old tank out I will tell you how to switch over the sending unit to the new tank . COOL
